Metinvest Polytechnic University

A STEEL CASTLE OF EDUCATION

Metinvest Polytechnic University is located at one of the historical parks in Mariupol, Ukraine.
Currently, the park is, likewise many historical parks in the former Soviet-union cities, having insufficient maintenance due to lack of funding thus hibernating its potential. The goal of the project is not only to create a contemporary university to attract new generations to Mariupol but also to be the catalyst, both culturally and financially, for the preservation, renovation, and activation of the park.

Mariupol is one of the major cities in Ukraine based on the steel industry as the largest industry in the country. It was a natural decision to construct the building out of the most local material in this region. The challenge of the project is how to expose the “naked beauty” of the raw steel material both inside and outside of the building by using monumental but primitive geometrical compositions.

The very small footprint of this building is placed where the currently abandoned movie theater already stands. Obviously, it was the top priority to preserve the existing trees of the park to minimize the environmental impact of the project. The large roof terraces of the building provide a great vista of the park, city center, and the Sea of Azov. And the ground floor of the building has maximum transparency towards the park as well as having public programs to optimally open towards the citizens and visitors of Mariupol.
